Last night it was just me and another guy workin' at the shop. I have the PCT map up in one of the storage rooms, so we got to talkin about the hike during our break... Actually seeing the map left him SHOCKED at the distance I would be traveling, I don't think the numbers translated until he had a visual... This of course led to me daydreaming and havin' a little fun while I blasted a dam gate... After an entire year of research, reading, and $ raising, it's almost here... I know you guys all feel the same..

Now that I have my 26 mail points picked out, something funny occurred to me. I have to pick out which gown I want to wear while standing on the highest point in the continental U.S. - something dramatic for a photo, yet unrestraining... haha... When is everyone thinking of starting? I'm wondering how this year will shape up as compared to others. It seems to me that the start dates are pretty constant. I was originally aiming for May 5thish but I want to help out trail angels shuttle and cook during the kickoff so I'll be down earlier. Anyone else?

I don't think this subject has popped up - Stove choices. I have a Snow Peak Gigapower Auto, love it, but the canister shipping seems a hassle. Not sure i have patience for the Pepsi Can Alcohol Stove, but like the simplicity of fuel. I didn't see much on the resupply points when it comes to canister fuel - Thoughts?

Morning Class......I wanted to know what kind of camera you were thinking about bringing out on the trail? I know some are serious photographers in this group so let's not get too out of hand for what it's worth. I have a Sony Cyber Shot 7.2 Small light digital camera. It has served me well for many years, but yesterday the lens door and motor started sticking and won't open without help. I am now looking for something new....or heck even used if the price is right. I want to take decent shots......so what is everyone else bringing?

Ok I'm on another binge. I'm getting toward the end of Yogi's guide book and she talks about Mosquitos. We all hate them and we know we have to deal with them while hiking. But, in her book all the hikers she interviewed including herself talk like deet is very bad for you. Like cause cancer bad. I didn't use it much on the CT but when I did I caked it on and did not have a skeeter problem. For all you chemical engineers or biologists, what is the scoop on DEET?

What about food safety in the National Parks? I could not find any information on the PCTA site so looked at the individual Park sites near or through which the PCT goes. One fun fact is that the majority of the bear problems are in established campgrounds with animals habituated to humans. alright-i pretty much cant wait to meet all you guys, or as many as i can. i am sure you are all going through the same things as me, with most of my Facebook feed being dominated by PCT updates now, which i love, but it is still sort of weird seeing all your faces everyday but still having never met you, and maybe never actually getting the chance too meet because the spread of the pack....

i have never been to the adzpctko but i am hoping there is a booth or area set up where the facebook groupers can all meet up and congregate a bit... as many people as there are on this forum, i am sure the we are still in the minority when it comes to all the people who will actually be hiking this year....

i still feel like sort of an outsider, because this is my first thru. like this hike is my initiation hike into an existence i have so desperately wished i was part of for so long now but so many things have kept me from making it a reality.

there is so much i am looking forward to due to the actuality of this hike...

So I suppose it's time to let you all in on my crazy 2012 PCT plan. Back in Jan, when I said I wanted to hike the PCT in '12 yet have no money to do so, one friend said "you should incorporate your creativity, and photography into the hike, then write a book", the other said "get a sponsor" - I said "who's gonna sponsor me, hundreds of people every year start this hike. I'm just some guy. 'Man with Mustache Hikes Trail' isn't very sponsor worthy..."

That's all it took. I looked back on a silly photo I took in Hells Canyon, with something i found in a dumpster.... And, well, the rest is all my kinda crazy.

Anybody interested in buying a blue ULA Circuit pack, small torso, S-straps? The belt is XS, but you can get it replaced with one your size if that's not your size. It's brand new, never used. ULA is willing to let me return it, even though it's a special order (the blue is the special bit, otherwise it's the same pack), but if somebody here would like it, I figured I'd give you first pick. Before I started my thru hike, a few alumni took time to tell me that what I was about to do was crazy, amazing, and life changing. I wanted to believe them, but wasn't sold on the idea. "It's just a long hike!" i thought. Now, here I am, still fresh from my hike, seeing a new group of people about to hit the PCT. I know you won't all believe it, but what you're about to do will change you in ways you cannot comprehend. I am totally envious of your ignorance.

Best advice I heard while on the trail? Stay on it as long as possible. You'll regret it the moment you leave it. It is very true. I know of a thru hiker that camped in their back yard recently they missed the PCT so much.

Something to consider instead of an ice axe: Black Dimond Whippet- I have one of these and I love it. When you are crossing a steep snow slope, you really want to have your poles in your hands, people tend to just keep ice axes on their pack where they are just dead weight. Using this you still have your pole and you have a self arrest tool. It didn't bother me at all to have the pick on there while hiking. They used to make a model that was just the top segment of a pole and you used the bottom of your normal pole. It was called the Whippet Trek, but I can't find it online anymore.

Best of all, they are free. You should check back to his site in the new year, when he'll post the most updated versions (that will include more campsites, more accurate trail routes, any re-routes, and opened sections previously closed). They saved my life a few times while on the PCT!

What about a sit pad? I didn't carry one on my first thruhike, but I carried a torso length one on my PCT hike- you are often taking breaks or siestas on prickly ground - if you are a thermarest-er like me you sure don't want to break that out. One of favorite pieces of gear now is the Thinlight pad from Gossamer Gear. It's only 1/8 inch thick- I use it for addl thermal insulation under my Neoair, its 5ft by 20 inches. In an effort to be teachable, I'm going to listen to the suggestions that my although my pack is fine for the AT, it is too small for the PCT. Big step for this know-it-all considering I didn't finish the AT in part due to not taking a few well founded suggestions. I hate admitting I'm wrong!

My greatest fear - My cold hands. Apparently at some point in my childhood my fingers were frostbitten just bad enough to stop circulation when they get even remotely cold. I'm talkin 55* can do it. This is my one great fear - Hot Hands are added weight and useless when cold. Even great gloves don't help much. I plan getting mittens to try out too. Anyone else have this problem? When out in the snow around home i always have hand warmers, but weeks in the Sierras has me concerned. Thoughts?

The most difficult part of the entire PCT planning process, which I began nearly a year ago, has been the incredible number of OPINIONS and OPTIONS. I've found Suggestions have been the most helpful... I think we should remember - What works for you may not work for them, and just because it didn't work for you, doesn't mean it's not worth someone else trying it out. =-)

I want to share with you how in awe I am of the ULA customer service. I sent Chris a question about the straps (J vs. S). I got an auto-answer saying he's in Nepal and that I should direct my questions to Rodney. So I sent Rodney an email. Within ten minutes (on a Saturday evening) I got an email from both Chris and Rodney. Chris said he's at some airport in Thailand and about to catch a flight. Amazing! But then both their answers is that both straps are great and that it's a matter of personal preference, so that doesn't help much :-)

Hey fellow outdoor enthusiasts. Thought i would share my weekend plans, Backpacking in the Anza-Borrego desert for 3days 2nights relishing the opportunity 2 test out some of my gear for the PCT!!!. there are lots of great hikes out there! today i plan on hiking to the highest peak in the southern anza Sombrero Peak at 4,229ft and then on saturday out 2 the coyotemtns/ carrizzo badlands where the slot canyons and mud caves are!! Should be a blast! What is everyone else doing this weekend? any outdoor adventures?!!!

159 days until I can start walking, my dream turned plan is now a full-blown obsession. I think that's the way it should be. I am relishing the anticipation. I just quit a PhD program and am looking for a job to patch me over for 158 days. Barista would do me well. Got an iPhone 4S yesterday - the voice recognition feature is truly amazing and is going to make journaling SO easy! You just have to go through and add punctuation etc after but otherwise it's incredible and get 95% of the words right. I'm going to practice doing email and text updates to my journal tonight.

from the gear geek dept: I've been using an MSR Titan Kettle for about ten years now and just got an Evernew 0.9L Non Stick Ti pot (I like to cook my liptons, never can make them to my liking with boil-in-bag and pot cozy) and this thing rocks. It boils considerably faster with my cat food can stove than the MSR ever did and no boil-overs

I have thru-hiked the PCT twice and the CDT once. Might hike out the PCT again in 2012. Not sure if any advise I could give will be very useful. A successful thru-hike is mostly a matter of deciding, in advance, to overcome all obstacles you meet along the way. With a commitment like that it almost does not matter what kind of gear you carry or what re-supply strategy you use. Will check in from time to time to answer what questions I can.
