Hey guys/gals, so I'm bringing my SLR on the trail. No question about that one. I do have a question about what kind of cases any of you may have used with both the camera (Canon Rebel) and lenses (I will have two fixed lenses - 28mm and 50mm - both small). I'm worried a bit about waterproofing.

I didn't want the weight of a SLR but was bummed about not having a circular polarizer for those delicious blue skies along the trail. Lensmate has filter adapters for digital point and shoot camera. They had one for my S95. Sweet!

Actually made jokes while camping about how I'm doing everything wrong and all my stuff is heavy. Met some folks who have hiked the Pct and some of the cdt, their "good luck"felt like it was followed by a silent "dumbass". Will not join my voice to gear talk as my way seems to bother some ultralighters. I do appreciate the advice and you're probably all rights and that's OK. Not sure why I'm in a mood but just am. The trail seems so far away sometimes.

2200 miler here...I started on the AT with a 200 dollar pair of Asolo full leather GTX hiking BOOTS and wore them to Vermont!!! I there switched to a pair of busted Reebok shoes I had in my basement. They fell apart coming off of Katahdin! I plan on going through 2 pair of sketcher "trail" shoes this season on PCT...35bux apiece at my mall! Do what you feel is best, then commit to makin that work! Do nothing solely because it's trendy, and u will usually save money!

One more flip side question - Anyone not have to or know of anyone that really did not have to get bigger size shoes??

Let me ask a flip side question. Who has started the hike with more traditional hiking "shoes" with not all the new trail running vent. marketing and not really had any issues??

My Scouting training leads me to focus on preparedness. My goal is long distance travel with minimum need for resupply. Imagine two weeks of food and supplies, two days between water refills, and fully stocked first aid kit. Might slow me down but I'll find the right balance. Have up to 80lb upper limit, now that's ridiculous.

In the desert I will have water carrying capacity of 19liters, I'll be a moving cache. Being native to Puget Sound I am a bit freaked by the desert

Morning Class......I wanted to know what kind of camera you were thinking about bringing out on the trail? I know some are serious photographers in this group so let's not get too out of hand for what it's worth. I have a Sony Cyber Shot 7.2 Small light digital camera. It has served me well for many years, but yesterday the lens door and motor started sticking and won't open without help. I am now looking for something new....or heck even used if the price is right. I want to take decent shots......so what is everyone else bringing?

Ok I'm on another binge. I'm getting toward the end of Yogi's guide book and she talks about Mosquitos. We all hate them and we know we have to deal with them while hiking. But, in her book all the hikers she interviewed including herself talk like deet is very bad for you. Like cause cancer bad. I didn't use it much on the CT but when I did I caked it on and did not have a skeeter problem. For all you chemical engineers or biologists, what is the scoop on DEET?

Ok I am trying to finish part 2 of my colorado trail video. I used to use Kazaa and then limewire to find music. Can't use them anymore. Anyone know another place to get music? I tried frostwire but don't like it.
