I can't decided about shoes. Should I go with Merrell's Moab Ventilator (the low-top, not gortex ones) which might not have as much ventilation as Yogi recommends, but are, in my opinion they most comfortable shoe ever. Or should I find something new and meshy-er?

I have my name on the map list. I need to know how long it will take before we put the order in and how long will it take to print out and have them posted to San Diego. As I then will have them sent to me in Oz land and want to make sure I receive them before I leave on my roundabout trip to USA. I leave on the 1st April. Gives a window of only 8 weeks. I hope this will be enough time.

i am really thankful for this group, and all its diversity, and conflicting points of view. it is helping me realize more and more about what i want out of this hike, who i want to spend my time with, and who/what to look out for. while some of the threads can steer in different directions, sometimes even hurtful, judgmental, and just in bad taste, it at least give me perspective of what to expect, and how to approach certain situations. This trail, the decision to hike it, and joining this group are already making me a better person, and i have to thank a lot of you folks, (who i CANT wait to meet and hike with in about 3 months)! keep it up class of 2012! i have never thru-hiked before, but i feel as i am prepping to hike with one of the most awesome classes to date! thanks folks!

Word from the experienced. As you all search for gear for your upcoming hike remember that you have to use these products every single day of your life. Dont look at just getting the lightest things possible but look for comfort and reliability in the gear you purchase, look for reviews and really examine something before you purchase a piece. For example i went with a small foam sleeping pad last season and was miserable when it got three months in sleeing on something so thin...this year its a neo air. So just realize that its not all about weight. That is all

Morning Class......I wanted to know what kind of camera you were thinking about bringing out on the trail? I know some are serious photographers in this group so let's not get too out of hand for what it's worth. I have a Sony Cyber Shot 7.2 Small light digital camera. It has served me well for many years, but yesterday the lens door and motor started sticking and won't open without help. I am now looking for something new....or heck even used if the price is right. I want to take decent shots......so what is everyone else bringing?

Ok I'm on another binge. I'm getting toward the end of Yogi's guide book and she talks about Mosquitos. We all hate them and we know we have to deal with them while hiking. But, in her book all the hikers she interviewed including herself talk like deet is very bad for you. Like cause cancer bad. I didn't use it much on the CT but when I did I caked it on and did not have a skeeter problem. For all you chemical engineers or biologists, what is the scoop on DEET?

I ordered 10 PCT maps from the PCTA to give out so friends can follow the journey, but was rather disappointed that they don't offer shipping via the USPS. Considering PCT thru-hikers rely on the Post Offices, it seems to me the PCTA should be supporting the Postal Service.

The most difficult part of the entire PCT planning process, which I began nearly a year ago, has been the incredible number of OPINIONS and OPTIONS. I've found Suggestions have been the most helpful... I think we should remember - What works for you may not work for them, and just because it didn't work for you, doesn't mean it's not worth someone else trying it out. =-)
