Nephew's cat ironically peed on my cat's meow north face synthetic bag. Willing to give down bags a chance if someone floats one my way. No way am I sleeping for 6 months smelling old cat piss.

Last year was The Year of the Snow Pack. Will this year be The Year of the Blowdowns? "The Pacific Crest and John Muir trails are both impassable out of Reds Meadow, and much of the surrounding area has sustained damage."

I can't decided about shoes. Should I go with Merrell's Moab Ventilator (the low-top, not gortex ones) which might not have as much ventilation as Yogi recommends, but are, in my opinion they most comfortable shoe ever. Or should I find something new and meshy-er?

After 3 days in the Superstition mountains I have some good news ideas

This is where I imagine I will keep the rest of 'the world' updated about the numerous adventures in which I am likely to get involved while on the trail. Since you will be met, described and amplified in the course of the stories, I thought it'd be fair to give you the link. It's soooo close now. 74 days til I take off. I'm ready now.

For those of you endeavoring to learn the guitar, here's some inspiration for ya. Rodrigo y Gabriela are a famous guitar duo, and possibly my favorite duet of musicians. They are amaaaaaazing :) http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=lJR6Fsu2hZg&feature=you tube_gdata_player

Not as impressive as what others have up, but if you want to check it out, Julia and I have put together a Facebook page at facebook.com/pct2012 :)

I had this posted on my hike page a few days ago, and a few of you asked me to post this here. Lets be safe out there......

Any one out there going to do a pre PCT hike? May I suggest the Arizona trail. AZT hikers can crash at my place in Flagstaff. If your solo I can grab you on my tandem bike, otherwise, it is just a mile west on Butler ave to Guinopollis, buses run every half hour from the trail to my house. Their is a natural food supermarket a block away too for your resupply.

save been looking at pct stuff lately and probably a lot of pictures of the southern and northern terminus. what is the craziest thing you have seen someone doing at the terminus'? i am thinking about backflipping off the top this year and capturing a photo of me upside down next to it. :)

I came across this about MAPS from another site. You can effectively use a compass with any of the map sets. (Yogi has no maps)
The PCT is a very well marked trail. You will rarely use the maps out of necessity thanks to all the hard-working folks maintaining the trail. But at some point you will refer to them.
What you will rely on heavily is the data book. You will frequently refer to it seeking out distances to your next water stop, town stop, landmark, etc. Halfmile and Erik have maps but no data book. Searching a map for locations far up the trail and extracting distances is a major pain. Yogi's data book is Ben Go's data used by permission, but Yogi has no maps at all. ...

My best opportunity to shed weight is lighter shelter. Need suggestions, remembering I'm flat broke.

Question for lurking recent alumni: what's the Ollalie Lake store like these days? Twenty years ago it was an oasis of cold beer, ice cream, and junk food.

Saw this yesterday evening: "Last year was a heavy snow year in the Sierras. This year/season, as of Jan 4th, according to the California Department of Water Resources reports the snow pack is one of the lowest on record. Southern Sierra snow is reported to be 26% of normal and central Sierra snow is just 13% of normal."

Dear Mom, Thank you for returning the Gos. Gear poles you bought me for Xmas - sorry about that. When I sent you a list of things I still needed @ Mountain Gear to buy instead, I meant for you to pick one, or two things - Not EVERYTHING - but don't worry, I'm graciously accepting all of it. The PCT c/o 2012 suggestion for socks I wanted ( Smartwool PhD ), that was so I could try them out... SIX PAIR is likely more than I'll need over the 2650 miles. I know you know I love me some Smartwool though... Good Mom... Very. Good. Mom.
Your ever loving, slightly strange, outwardly crazy, Son.

This is just to get a feel for what might be considered the average but I'm curious how much weight we will all be carrying. My base with everything (down to the gram) is 12.6 lbs. I'll be glad to send a gear list to anyone but Didn't want to post it because I hate people telling me if I should or should not be carrying something. so without starting a war and without asking for negative comments. What is your base weight?

- John McKinney

BearVault450.... will that do the trick?

- Dustin Smith

is anyone going to be carrying something random? ie. for me it will be a small koala bear, a harmonica, and a lot of hemp and beads.

Hey Guys, 2010 and 2011 I hiked the AT in Keen sandals, they were great, in the snow I wore 2 pair wool socks and had no problems feet wet but not cold. The water crossings I just waded in they dried out very quickly. What I want to know has anyone had any experience with hiking the PCT in keen Sandals? I had no problems with stones, twigs etc. The type I have, have a great toe box so no sore or bruised toes. And no Blisters ever.
I would not wear boots, but not sure if trail runners would be better than my keen sandals.

where are you from? maybe this can help with training hikes or ride-share....please add your own as an option for others to choose as well..

Good morning PCT Class of 2012. I'm the Bobcat. Full name is Bouncing Bobcat.
159 days until I can start walking, my dream turned plan is now a full-blown obsession. I think that's the way it should be. I am relishing the anticipation. I just quit a PhD program and am looking for a job to patch me over for 158 days. Barista would do me well. In the meantime, if any of you want to go on training hiking/snowshoe/ski adventures, hit me up. I am in Bellingham, WA, within playing distance of the Cascades.
