I'm planning for ten days food and supply. Is the only negative the weight if my pack and legs can take it? There may be times I move slow or take a side trip where I have a fortnight's food on board. Will I be making a tactical error here?

How is the rain issue on using side entry tents like the Tarptents? I was/am looking the the rainbow and one generalized question I have is about getting rain on gear/stuff when you get in/out of tent?? Never really even seen a side entry tent in person..

I have my name on the map list. I need to know how long it will take before we put the order in and how long will it take to print out and have them posted to San Diego. As I then will have them sent to me in Oz land and want to make sure I receive them before I leave on my roundabout trip to USA. I leave on the 1st April. Gives a window of only 8 weeks. I hope this will be enough time.

i am really thankful for this group, and all its diversity, and conflicting points of view. it is helping me realize more and more about what i want out of this hike, who i want to spend my time with, and who/what to look out for. while some of the threads can steer in different directions, sometimes even hurtful, judgmental, and just in bad taste, it at least give me perspective of what to expect, and how to approach certain situations. This trail, the decision to hike it, and joining this group are already making me a better person, and i have to thank a lot of you folks, (who i CANT wait to meet and hike with in about 3 months)! keep it up class of 2012! i have never thru-hiked before, but i feel as i am prepping to hike with one of the most awesome classes to date! thanks folks!

Thanks guys this is becoming much clearer for me. It appears that my iphone 4g apple the latest model can be unlocked from my provider and I can use it in the states if I connect to T Mobile or AT & T. I mainly wanted to use Verison because of the good service they have on the PCT. I was hoping to use the GPS system with the downloaded PCT SD card with all the maps. This is probably not an option I think I would be better off getting a GPS and an inexpensive verison go phone for phone calls just to use in the states. Thanks one and all for your input.

As requested:
"Fuel Fudge, makes 32 0.7 oz servings, total weight 1lb 5oz.

At home: microwave: 1 16 oz jar of peanut butter till flows easily. Stir in 4 oz hot bacon grease. Mix in 0.5 cup honey, 3 cups powdered milk, 2 cups peanuts, 1 cup raisins, 1 cup flaked sweetened coconut. Spread 1-inch thick into 2 greased 8x8 pans and let cool. Cut each pan into 16 squares.
"May turn gloppy after a couple weeks on the trail... should keep unspoiled for ~4 weeks no problem."
Recommended to eat before getting into your bag at night to keep warm.
per serving: 250 cal, 9g protein, 19g carb, 110mg sodium, 3 g fiber, 19g fat, 6 mg cholesterol"
I substitute almond butter, ditch the nuts, coconut and raisins in favor of bacon. Dip frozen squares in dark chocolate and roll in more crushed bacon. I think this adds about 150 calories and helps keep them stable.

This may be a dumb question but I am going to ask.
I have an Iphone connected to an Australian provider (vodophone) If I bring that Iphone with me to the USA for my PCT hike will I be able to connect to say verison without too much hassle. Is the sim card( if thats what these Iphone have) say interchangeable so I can take it out and replace when I want to use it local when in the states and then replace it when I get back to Oz land???

Hi all .. Gonna gibe it a shot a again thisy ear ... 3rd times a charm, right? Knee injury in '08 after postholing coming over Silver Pass into Touloumne. Last year SOOO much snow I wouldn't have been able finish in my time frame (and being abducted by the Anderson's .. Hi Terri :) This year looks promising but water in the desert will probably be an issue .. Treat ASABAT's water guide as your bible. Hope to see you out there.

I will start on the 25th of April and hike into the Kick- 0ff.

It occured to me last year that the only weight benefit freeze dried and other similarly concentrated foods provide are where water is plentiful, and that, of course, isn't the desert. That is, you still need water with them and unless you're actually camping or eating where there is water, which is problematic, you're just carrying it in your water bottles instead of in the food itself. You're still carrying the same amount of water that you require. It seemed to me that I might as well carry "real" food. If that's the case, the Sierra would be most dehydrator friendly. Am I missing something here?

Food situation. Dietary need to minimize fats and exclude all dairy.
Some staples won't be available at some resupply points.
I'm gonna need to carry a ridiculous pile of sacks of grain.
Anybody use quinoa or tabouleh? Or other... Hippiesque accouterments?
How many days in a row can I hike stupid milage eating oats, trail mix and mashed potatoes with agarlic flavoured bullion cube?

What about low water year scooping tools/techniques for getting water from tiny dribbles and other gross desert water situations? I rarely have to work hard for water here in the northeast so any veteran advice would be appreciated

Craigs PCT Planner - I haven't seen anything mentioned about this (or did I miss it?) Wired suggested it, I've been procrastinating doing it since Feb. Not knowing my hiking pace as I really get into this, it's difficult to plug my numbers in and finish before Jan of 2013 ( kidding about that last bit of course) Anyone else doing it?
