I decided to hike the PCT in order to see what I was made of. Since I just found out that I am made of approximately 5.1 x 10^27 atoms, I am pleased to announce that I will no longer need to engage in such an arduous journey to settle this matter. And if perhaps you were considering hiking for the same reason, you can thank me at the KO (which I am attending for reasons I prefer to keep to myself) for saving you the time, money, and general hassle of putting your life in the real world on hold for five to six months.

Because my hike budget has evaporated from unemployment I have to be creative. Instead of resupply boxes I might send a shopping list and address to various friends and family, inviting them to fuel my adventure.

Hi all .. Gonna gibe it a shot a again thisy ear ... 3rd times a charm, right? Knee injury in '08 after postholing coming over Silver Pass into Touloumne. Last year SOOO much snow I wouldn't have been able finish in my time frame (and being abducted by the Anderson's .. Hi Terri :) This year looks promising but water in the desert will probably be an issue .. Treat ASABAT's water guide as your bible. Hope to see you out there.

I will start on the 25th of April and hike into the Kick- 0ff.

It occured to me last year that the only weight benefit freeze dried and other similarly concentrated foods provide are where water is plentiful, and that, of course, isn't the desert. That is, you still need water with them and unless you're actually camping or eating where there is water, which is problematic, you're just carrying it in your water bottles instead of in the food itself. You're still carrying the same amount of water that you require. It seemed to me that I might as well carry "real" food. If that's the case, the Sierra would be most dehydrator friendly. Am I missing something here?

Food situation. Dietary need to minimize fats and exclude all dairy.
Some staples won't be available at some resupply points.
I'm gonna need to carry a ridiculous pile of sacks of grain.
Anybody use quinoa or tabouleh? Or other... Hippiesque accouterments?
How many days in a row can I hike stupid milage eating oats, trail mix and mashed potatoes with agarlic flavoured bullion cube?

What about low water year scooping tools/techniques for getting water from tiny dribbles and other gross desert water situations? I rarely have to work hard for water here in the northeast so any veteran advice would be appreciated

Craigs PCT Planner - I haven't seen anything mentioned about this (or did I miss it?) Wired suggested it, I've been procrastinating doing it since Feb. Not knowing my hiking pace as I really get into this, it's difficult to plug my numbers in and finish before Jan of 2013 ( kidding about that last bit of course) Anyone else doing it?

Before I started my thru hike, a few alumni took time to tell me that what I was about to do was crazy, amazing, and life changing. I wanted to believe them, but wasn't sold on the idea. "It's just a long hike!" i thought. Now, here I am, still fresh from my hike, seeing a new group of people about to hit the PCT. I know you won't all believe it, but what you're about to do will change you in ways you cannot comprehend. I am totally envious of your ignorance.

Best advice I heard while on the trail? Stay on it as long as possible. You'll regret it the moment you leave it. It is very true. I know of a thru hiker that camped in their back yard recently they missed the PCT so much.
