Seperate and apart from data/handbooks ( I carry the data book, with maps for backup which are rarely used ), and partly from frustation at the WP geologic jargon given I didn't have a background in geology, I read John McPhee's, Annals of a Former World. A Pulitzer prize winner, this book is well written in engaging prose and allowed me to understand and appreciate what I was seeing along the way. If you need an alternative to obsessing about gear this is an option.

So if I'm using Halfmile's maps and has Yogi's books, is there any need at all for the 3 PCT guidebooks?

Man - Just saying why not use it.. I may end up with a total new gear set... I see some talk about leaving high end stuff at home - not from this page but planning blogs. I have Arcteryx beta AR jacket and SL pants. Why would I use a cheap set of rain gear or garbage bags if I have the above.. It's my cold weather gear, wind gear, storm gear, survival gear.. Those with smart wool are my Kennedys Meadows on gear set..

Next yea I got a Tit. jetboil - when I want to eat I want to eat.. Maybe coffee sometimes.

It was easier for me to sketch this rather than to explain it. This is how I protected non-waterproof maps on the trail. Hope it helps...

Anyone have any idea of the amount of wifi access there is in trail towns? I am hoping to be able to upload photos/journal entries as much as possible. What are people doing for this, or are most of you just uploading at the end?

Is any one going to get an umbrella as there luxury item? If so r u going withe the golite 6oz. or if u found something else
