I'm curious how many couples do a quilt instead of 2 bags? We each have a lightweight down bag right now, but if we went with a quilt we'd be saving about a pound and a half! And I wouldn't mind the sleeping arrangement...

The source of conflict between my plan and much of the advice,(much appreciated) in this group lies in my overall style. I want to know how traveling would be if there was no other world support. I will have food mailed in and will use stores to resupply as well. It's the gear. What if I have no place to keep stuff not on my back? I want a bunch of kit that works in desert and mountain. The answer keeps returning to a heavier than most pack and a less speedy pace. Gear selection is tricky when, if I don't have it I'm not going to have it. That's why I wear heavy leather boots. That's why I can start off slow with 10 day's food because I have the Denali Pro, 8lbs empty, pack that can be comfortable at 80lb (of course only in emergencies). If I have to carry snow gear across the desert it's because home is on the other side of many mountains. It's going to be an interesting year.
