On March 7, 2012, Gleb "Drug Store" Velikanov will be at REI in Tualatin, sharing photos (slideshow) and stories from his 2010 thru-hike of the Pacific Crest Trail.

The thought of hiking the PCT first hit Gleb while he was in college and 10 years later, on May 9th, 2010 he began his long awaited journey.  His presentation covers everything from the arduous pre-hike task of gaining 20 pounds (and losing it halfway through) to hiking ailments, scenery, fellow hiking characters, gear, trail angels/magic and everything in between.  If you're considering long distance hiking, particularly on the Pacific Crest Trail, this informative, self effacing, and humorous hiker will help inspire you to get out of the city and into the woods.

Hey guys/gals, so I'm bringing my SLR on the trail. No question about that one. I do have a question about what kind of cases any of you may have used with both the camera (Canon Rebel) and lenses (I will have two fixed lenses - 28mm and 50mm - both small). I'm worried a bit about waterproofing.

Actually made jokes while camping about how I'm doing everything wrong and all my stuff is heavy. Met some folks who have hiked the Pct and some of the cdt, their "good luck"felt like it was followed by a silent "dumbass". Will not join my voice to gear talk as my way seems to bother some ultralighters. I do appreciate the advice and you're probably all rights and that's OK. Not sure why I'm in a mood but just am. The trail seems so far away sometimes.

2200 miler here...I started on the AT with a 200 dollar pair of Asolo full leather GTX hiking BOOTS and wore them to Vermont!!! I there switched to a pair of busted Reebok shoes I had in my basement. They fell apart coming off of Katahdin! I plan on going through 2 pair of sketcher "trail" shoes this season on PCT...35bux apiece at my mall! Do what you feel is best, then commit to makin that work! Do nothing solely because it's trendy, and u will usually save money!

Curious what people are bringing for Video Cameras? We're bringing a Canon Powershot for digital stills, but I was also planning on bringing my Kodak Playsport. The wife will have the Canon, I'll have the Playsport (because it's waterproof / shockproof and thus "me" proof... unless I lose it somewhere). Do any of you thru hiking veterans have some recommendations on the use of consumables like sunblock? Hand Sanitizer? TP (if you use it)? How long does an ounce of sunblock last in the desert? I've put together a spreadsheet of contacts for the hike using halfmile, hikertrash, pct-l, and postholer. Angels, post offices, transport, resupply... 90 entries. I can export it as a tab delimited file and import it to my address book, which then synchs to my phone. I find it handy on the trail not to be pawing through pages when I just want to confirm post office hours or ask about bus schedules. Anyone want a copy or have additions?

Thought it would be a good idea to call the bank and cc companies and let them know what I'm up to. I'm driving out to CA from Maine and back afterwards, a different route each time. How To Yogi: A Primer
Or, The Fine Art of Obtaining Beer During a Chance Encounter at a Roadside or Campground.
Last year I inadvertently discovered an almost fool-proof way to successfully yogi beer while on the trail. I was the constant envy of my companions with a great success rate. As an example, I rolled into the campground after the Marble Mountains and before the road walk into Seiad Valley with Cheryl and Jerry whom I'd met some miles before. I was reminescing about Deep Creek and how within 5 minutes I'd had two Mike's Hard Lemonades and two beers given to me.
The were politely incredulous and mentioned how it would be great if I could produce some then, but other than us the campground was deserted. Within 5 minutes I walked back into camp with a Mike's for each of us, plus a ride into town to buy BBQ fixings for that night. True, I happened to see a dog at down road and followed it to an encampment and that was luck, the rest, however, was skill.
Here's how it works. Like everything you have to be sincere and not come across as a lowlife scam artist; I actually discovered this technique with the best of intentions. Take three singles, hopefully crumpled and dirty and have them clutched in your hand and obvious as you approach the truck at the road crossing or other target of opportunity. After a friendly greeting, usually followed with a digression about your hike, ask if there is anyway you could buy a soda. Note: be sure you ask for a soda, not a beer.
Here's the thing: 4 times out of 5 they won't have a soda, but will have beer and this will be offered to you. I never had the money accepted, but you have to demonstrate good faith in having it out and be prepared to part with it, yes, even for a soda. Be grateful! Say thank you! I couldn't believe how much beer I wound up with on my hike last year and how happy people were to provide it

The source of conflict between my plan and much of the advice,(much appreciated) in this group lies in my overall style. I want to know how traveling would be if there was no other world support. I will have food mailed in and will use stores to resupply as well. It's the gear. What if I have no place to keep stuff not on my back? I want a bunch of kit that works in desert and mountain. The answer keeps returning to a heavier than most pack and a less speedy pace. Gear selection is tricky when, if I don't have it I'm not going to have it. That's why I wear heavy leather boots. That's why I can start off slow with 10 day's food because I have the Denali Pro, 8lbs empty, pack that can be comfortable at 80lb (of course only in emergencies). If I have to carry snow gear across the desert it's because home is on the other side of many mountains. It's going to be an interesting year.

i am really thankful for this group, and all its diversity, and conflicting points of view. it is helping me realize more and more about what i want out of this hike, who i want to spend my time with, and who/what to look out for. while some of the threads can steer in different directions, sometimes even hurtful, judgmental, and just in bad taste, it at least give me perspective of what to expect, and how to approach certain situations. Seperate and apart from data/handbooks ( I carry the data book, with maps for backup which are rarely used ), and partly from frustation at the WP geologic jargon given I didn't have a background in geology, I read John McPhee's, Annals of a Former World. A Pulitzer prize winner, this book is well written in engaging prose and allowed me to understand and appreciate what I was seeing along the way. If you need an alternative to obsessing about gear this is an option.

Man - Just saying why not use it.. I may end up with a total new gear set... I see some talk about leaving high end stuff at home - not from this page but planning blogs. I have Arcteryx beta AR jacket and SL pants. Why would I use a cheap set of rain gear or garbage bags if I have the above.. It's my cold weather gear, wind gear, storm gear, survival gear.. Those with smart wool are my Kennedys Meadows on gear set..

Next yea I got a Tit. jetboil - when I want to eat I want to eat.. Maybe coffee sometimes.

Yes!! Finally!! the PCTA is now accepting long distance permit requests!!. they warn that your permit start and end points must be on the trail and specific or they can not issue it. Campo, CA is the start obviously so would the end point be Manning, BC, or is it a town before that in washington??

Called about California Fire Permits today (which you are supposed to have on you if you're using a stove of having a campfire) They have recently hired a new internet vendor and the permit link will be updated sometime before April. (the form posted currently is for 2010!) The nice woman on the phone said you can also walk into any National Forest office in CA and get one in person.

One thought for anybody planning on taking Greyhound to San Diego for start, who is coming from points east(ugggghhhh i hate greyhound). Check out taking it to Calexico instead, walk across the border, then take cheap (less than 10$/110 pesos) bus to Tecate, where u can walk across the border again to Campo. All of the bus stations involved are very close to the border.

After reading Ron's deodorant thread....got me to thinking. Shampoo and conditioner? Do any other hikers worry about this sort of thing......or do you just wait to get into a trail town or hotel to get a good shower? I DO carry 2 small bottles of each because that is one thing I just have to do.....at least the conditioning part. Even if it's in a stream or campground faucet. So, Let's hear it......

I just vented my frustration via Email, to the PCTA - Not sure if any of you view my irritation with this the same way, and I truly DON'T do politics, but I take issue in the PCTA only offering FedEx (at insane prices)... It costs me $4 to send shirts to people via the USPS, so why $11 via Fed ex for a package weighing the same? "Dear PCTA,
Howdy.... I purchased a bundle of maps to distribute to friends a few months back and was saddened to find that you're not supporting the USPS - OUR MAIN SUPPLY LIFELINE on the PCT. Today, as I was about to buy the Data Book, I've decided something needs to be done about this. The shipping via Fed Ex costs MORE than the Data book, just as the maps that I purchased. I'm disgusted by this.
So as we're all gearing up to hike the PCT this year, (pinching pennies to do so) and I'm shipping all of my drops everywhere there's a Post Office available, I would like to know why the PCTA doesn't use the USPS !??? I don't care for politics and protests, but it's simply obvious to me that the PCTA is supporting the wrong shipping service. When you're posting about possible Post Office closures along the trail, did it cross anyone's mind that it's lack of support that's causing such closures?

Thanks guys this is becoming much clearer for me. It appears that my iphone 4g apple the latest model can be unlocked from my provider and I can use it in the states if I connect to T Mobile or AT & T. I mainly wanted to use Verison because of the good service they have on the PCT. I was hoping to use the GPS system with the downloaded PCT SD card with all the maps. This is probably not an option I think I would be better off getting a GPS and an inexpensive verison go phone for phone calls just to use in the states. Thanks one and all for your input.

"Fuel Fudge, makes 32 0.7 oz servings, total weight 1lb 5oz.

At home: microwave: 1 16 oz jar of peanut butter till flows easily. Stir in 4 oz hot bacon grease. Mix in 0.5 cup honey, 3 cups powdered milk, 2 cups peanuts, 1 cup raisins, 1 cup flaked sweetened coconut. Spread 1-inch thick into 2 greased 8x8 pans and let cool. Cut each pan into 16 squares.
"May turn gloppy after a couple weeks on the trail... should keep unspoiled for ~4 weeks no problem."
Recommended to eat before getting into your bag at night to keep warm.
per serving: 250 cal, 9g protein, 19g carb, 110mg sodium, 3 g fiber, 19g fat, 6 mg cholesterol"
I substitute almond butter, ditch the nuts, coconut and raisins in favor of bacon. Dip frozen squares in dark chocolate and roll in more crushed bacon. I think this adds about 150 calories and helps keep them stable.

This may be a dumb question but I am going to ask.
I have an Iphone connected to an Australian provider (vodophone) If I bring that Iphone with me to the USA for my PCT hike will I be able to connect to say verison without too much hassle. Is the sim card( if thats what these Iphone have) say interchangeable so I can take it out and replace when I want to use it local when in the states and then replace it when I get back to Oz land???

I decided to hike the PCT in order to see what I was made of. Since I just found out that I am made of approximately 5.1 x 10^27 atoms, I am pleased to announce that I will no longer need to engage in such an arduous journey to settle this matter. And if perhaps you were considering hiking for the same reason, you can thank me at the KO (which I am attending for reasons I prefer to keep to myself) for saving you the time, money, and general hassle of putting your life in the real world on hold for five to six months.

Ok so here goes one of my big concerns.. Does anyone have any advice on entering into Canada if one may have aquired the stellar honor of a DUI. Yogi seems to ellude to just entering with a passport and not applying. Anyone have any insight on this particular conundrum or maybe a hike out strategy?. Well looked at Halfmile's start date summary list and it does make one think about the reality of start dates, milage etc in order to finish around Oct.1... I really don't wish to get all the way to N. Washington a little late in the season and get shut down by a snow storm.. I do wish to enjoy the views, fellow hikers, etc but if one starts a little early say the 15th - you will be the trail blazer / "scout" of the pack and basically solo..
Also - I really don't mind trying to catch a ride into some of the resupply towns but there are more then a few that are 20+ miles out.. A long walk out/in.. Is it still really possible to get other to stop and give you a lift in/out of town these days..
